WHATS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST??

Alentejo-CoastRomance is in high season. Ask the team at I Do Romance, a division of SitInMySeats VIP Tickets, Travel & Concierge Services. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner and the wedding season about to kick into high gear, our team is often asked for their advice on the newest and trendiest places to visit for romance, wine and food.

After designing many amazing romantic culinary trips to Europe we have become bored with Bordeaux and tired of Tuscany says Lisa Crawford, CEO/Founder. So we ventured out to find the newest and hottest spot for some great food and wine and stumbled on the Portuguese region of Alentejo. It seems that Portugal has found its edge with quiet beaches, empty trails, forgotten villages and emerging wines. To travel here is to step back in time some 40 or 50 years.Ariel-view-of-Alentejo

Alentejo is the South-Central part of Portugal. The greater region is defined within Portugal by the land bordering the left bank of the Tagus river to the North and extending to the South where it borders the Algarve region. The plains extend as far as the eye can see and consist of a huge expanse of grain fields, olive groves, cork forests and vineyards. Combine this with the sun, heat, amazing beaches and a slower pace of life and you have arrived! The Alentejo is the breadbasket of Portugal, producing roughly half of its wine and is the largest manufacturer of cork in the world.Portugal 1

“Wine is the sweet nectar of life” is the saying that is written on one of the walls of the new trendy chic wine-themed hotel, Torre de Palma. The area boasts complex red wines and sun-baked terroir with more and more boutique hotels and resorts beginning to dot the area. The Alentejo region is being touted as the new more affordable Tuscany! It is just as food-orientated with entry-level wines that are a better value than in Chiantishire. And ,if you want to still have that Italian feeling, the area has an abundance of Roman remains: Évora has city walls, a huge aqueduct and a temple dedicated to Augustus.herdade-da-malhadinha-nova-imagem9

Some of our favorite unique haunts are The Malhadinha Nova hotel and spa which pairs its wines with cured hams from black pigs raised on its grounds. An homage to wine’s constant companion (and a regional staple), the two-year-old Ecorkhotel bills itself as the world’s first cork-covered hotel, complete with chromatherapy spa and an “eno-gastronomic” restaurant. To take a walk on the wild side of Europe the three year old L’AND Vineyards resort has interiors designed by the Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan, a Caudalie wine spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and suites with retractable roofs for viewing the real stars. This exclusive and tranquil retreat with 38 villas is located among vineyard and orchards of orange, olive and almond trees with stunning views of the lake.

And for romantic beach lovers forget Ibiza, the Riviera and the Mediterranean altogether. Alentejo is lined with the most glorious beaches and is still unknown to many. Protected by the South West Alentejo and Costa Vicentina national park, the 100km of coastline from Porto Covo in the Alentejo to Burgau in the Algarve is the most stunning in Europe. And yet few people seem to know about it. Walkers come to admire the views from the Fisherman’s Way and surfers come to ride the best waves in Europe.   Portugal has some of the best surfing in Europe and hosts numerous international competitions and the surf schools are world-class, so you don’t need to be a professional to take to the waves.shutterstock_225576781

The sleepy seaside fishing village of Herdade da Comporta serves up beach and golf alongside its vineyards and is where Europe’s rich and fashionable go to get off the grid. With miles of spectacular beaches and very few visitors you truly have the best of all worlds.

So if you are in search of an incredible destination with good wine and food, history, spectacular beaches, ambiance, uniqueness and timelessness, may we suggest Alentejo. There is no better place to “Do Romance!”shutterstock_149449262
