A 16-YEAR-OLD FORT LAUDERDALE TEENAGER HAS CREATED A PPE COMPANY CALLED GERM GENIE, PERFECT FOR BATTLING COVID-19 GERMS AND KEEPING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE.
Henry Hurowitz is a 16-year-old from Fort Lauderdale who attends the NSU University School in Davie, Florida. At such a young age he can already claim “serial entrepreneur” status as he has already founded three businesses. One of them, Germ Genie, was created earlier this year as a solution to common public transportation germs. The idea to create the product came after Hurowitz fell asleep on an airplane tray table, only to wake up to find himself with a severe face rash. After this, he began to do some research, where he discovered that airplane tray tables are actually eight times dirtier than a toilet flush button!
Inspired by his medical mishap, Hurowitz created Germ Genie, a portable pouch priced at $19.99 that contains germ-fighting essentials like head rest covers, airplane tray table covers, non-latex gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting surface wipes to solve common problems with pesky pathogens associated with public transportation. To help his company take off, Hurowitz welcomed other team members onboard from his Junior Achievement of South Florida club. The Germ Genie team now consists of Hurowitz (CEO), Daniel Gutkin (CFO), Romy Peretz (CMO), Jonah Lubin (COO), and Benjy Sterne (CSO). They are all rising seniors between the ages of 16-17 at NSU University School.
Germ Genie was founded before the word COVID-19 had even entered the mainstream media, but after the pandemic took over the world, the company saw heightened success. Hurowitz was in talks with a major airline carrier, airport stores in MIA and JFK, and hotels, however his product sold out online almost overnight following COVID—and sourcing issues from China associated with the pandemic crippled fulfillment. However, the Germ Genie team was resilient and they were back up online in a couple weeks with the addition of a Deluxe Kit, priced at $34.99, that includes all of the above products plus shoe covers, toilet seat covers, a Johnson & Johnson first aid kit, and an N95 mask upgrade.
While currently being courted by big box retailers, Germ Genie was awarded the Delta Airlines Social Impact Award and New York Stock Exchange’s Best Financial Performance for a New Company Award. Hurowitz and his team have definitely put diligent work into the helpful PPE company and it is clearly paying off!
