Luka Dončić was born on February 28th, 1999, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Luka has been obsessed with the game of basketball since he was 7 months old— the age at which he first touched a basketball. He began playing on mini hoops and progressed to the real thing as time went on. When he turned 7 years old, he began playing organized basketball at school.
When Luka was 13, he signed a 5-year contract to play with Real Madrid. That year he averaged 24.5 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals per game. From 2017-2018, Luka had a more prominent role on the team and was really able to show off his talents. He won best young player and was the MVP of the league as he helped guide them to a championship.
Luka was selected as the 3rd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. He was taken by the Atlanta Hawks, but traded to the Dallas Mavericks. His impact was felt during his rookie year when he became the youngest player ever to record 3 triple-doubles; it was a record that was previously held by Hall of Famer Magic Johnson. By the end of the season, Luka was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
In his second season in the league, Luka made more history by setting the record for most consecutive games with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. That record was previously held by Michael Jordan. In December of 2019, Luka was named Sports Illustrated 2019 Breakout Player of the Year. It’s hard to believe that Luka is still only 20 years old, but he has set himself up for a long and illustrious career.
