Mookie Betts Steps up to the Plate

Markus Lynn “Mookie” Betts was born on October 7th, 1992 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was a standout baseball player as well as a basketball player at John Overton High School. In fact, he was named MVP of the District 12 AAA basketball league. Being named MVP in High School was perhaps a sign of things to come in his professional career, albeit in another sport.

Betts set his sights on baseball and has done well at every level since being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 5th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. He was drafted with the 172nd pick overall and all he has done since then, is hit. He has consistently hit over .300 at each minor league level and has taken the same approach and achieved the same results so far in the Major Leagues.

Betts was promoted to the Majors in June of 2014. Since then he has done some amazing things, such as going 129 consecutive plate appearances without a strikeout, recording 8 RBI out of the leadoff spot, and hit for the cycle. In 2018, his name is being mentioned in the same sentence as the best player in baseball, Mike Trout, as an MVP candidate. This year he has proven to be the most valuable player in baseball and his Red Sox team seems destined for another World Series title.
