Quirky, fierce, bold, and oh so likeable! Jennifer Lawrence has taken over Hollywood with her ability to capture people’s attention while on-screen and off-screen! She is definitely the type of woman to look up to.

Jennifer Shrader Lawrence was born on August 15, 1990, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Karen (Koch), who manages a children’s camp, and Gary Lawrence, who works in construction. She has two older brothers, Ben and Blaine, and has English, German, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Despite this, she is now one of the highest-paid actors, with Forbes ranking her as the world’s third highest- paid actress in 2017 with $24 million. Her acting career began when she traveled to Manhattan at the age of fourteen, after dropping out of the eighth grade. Jennifer Lawrence is, thus far, the only person born in the 1990s to have won an acting Oscar (Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook (2012)). In total, she has brought home three Golden Globes, one Oscar, a Saturn Award for Best Actress, and countless others, with 115 wins and 170 nominations in total. Surprisingly, Jennifer didn’t always have a passion for acting.

Although she dabbled in theater during school, she wanted to become a doctor. It wasn’t until a family vacation in New York City that her fate as an actress dawned on her. She was innocently strolling the city streets with her mother when a stranger asked to take her picture. She said that she had no idea that that was creepy [at the time], and so she agreed, allowing the man to take her picture. He then took down her mother’s number to stay in contact. The very next day, her phone rang, and soon after, she was reading her first script. “I read the script, and it was the first time I had that feeling like I understand this. This is the first time I’ve ever understood anything,” Lawrence reminisced. She had discovered her calling and no one could take it from her. Her parents were the “opposite of stage parents” as they didn’t really approve of her acting dream. As she protested and expressed to her parents how much she wanted to act, they allowed her to, under one condition: she must finish high school, and so she did. Then she spent the summer in New York to finally begin her acting career, starring in a small MTV commercial and even landing a part in the movie The Devil You Know (2013).

“MY PARENTS SAW ME SO TRULY HAPPY THAT THEY SACRIFICED EVERYTHING FOR MY HAPPINESS. WITHOUT MY FAMILY, I WOULD BE NOTHING,” SAID LAWRENCE.

But shortly thereafter, her career forced her and her family to move to Los Angeles, where she was cast in the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show (2007), The Poker House (2008), and The Burning Plain (2008). “I don’t know what it is with me and maternal wilderness girls, but I just love them. Even before Winter’s Bone, the first movie I ever did, The Poker House (2008), I was caring for my younger siblings in a tough, dark situation,” said Lawrence. She thanks her own stubborn 14-year-old self for her own successes, saying, “I just kind of had this blind, stupid drive that really only a 14-year-old could have, of just knowing that it was going to happen… failure [wasn’t] an option.” This allowed her to land the role of Ree in Winter’s Bone (2010). Lawrence said, “that this wasn’t a fun or easy movie to make by any means. I like it when things are hard; I’m very competitive. If something seems difficult or impossible, it interests me.”

Thereafter, Lawrence became a star in the cinematic world, with directors wanting to cast her left and right. It wasn’t long before she took the role as Mystique in X-Men: First Class (2011), claiming the franchise under her belt. A big step for Jennifer, that solidified herself in a guaranteed money-making territory with a movie that would be bound to continue for years to come. In August 2011, Lawrence won the role of a lifetime when she cast Katniss Everdeen in the big-screen adaptation of the literary sensation The Hunger Games (2012). The film then went on to become one of the highestgrossing movies ever, with over $407 million at the U.S. box office, and instantly propelled Lawrence as an A-list celebrity amongst young actors and actresses. By the age of 23, she became the youngest actress nominated for three Oscars, including two of them for leading roles, one of which she won. Towards Lawrence acting technique; Lawrance says,

“IT APPEARS EMOTIONALLY DRAINING TO YOU, BUT I DON’T GET EMOTIONALLY DRAINED BECAUSE I DON’T INVEST ANY OF MY GENUINE EMOTIONS IN IT. I DON’T TAKE ANY OF MY CHARACTERS’ PAIN HOME WITH ME; I DON’T EVEN TAKE IT TO CRAFT SERVICES. I’VE NEVER BEEN THROUGH ANYTHING LIKE WHAT MY CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN THROUGH. AND I CAN’T GO AROUND LOOKING FOR ROLES THAT ARE EXACTLY LIKE MY LIFE. SO, I JUST USE MY IMAGINATION. IF IT EVER CAME DOWN TO THE POINT WHERE, TO MAKE A PART BETTER, I HAD TO LOSE A LITTLE BIT OF MY SANITY, I WOULDN’T DO IT. I WOULD JUST DO COMEDIES.”

At the 70th Golden Globe Awards, after breaking up with her boyfriend, Nicola Hault, with whom they were in an on-and-off relationship throughout The Hunger Games movies from 2011 to 2014, she brought her parents as her date. Later on, that year, she was also in a short relationship with Chris Martin from June until October 2014.

On September 2017, she starred in the movie Mother, the only time she has acted out : STARS giving birth. “Every time you make a movie, you hope everyone likes it. It’s your only thought. That never crossed our minds. It’s an assault. I think it’s necessary. I’m proud of us”, said Lawrence. I’m proud of Darren [Aronofsky] and I’m proud of us banding together to deliver something we believe in. That Cinema Score [F]: we’re fine with it,” said Lawrence. Mother is a psychological thriller that is shocked by analytical themes and allegories. A film that sparked a debate, with critics declaring that you’ll either hate it or love it, with no in-between. This was such an intense, dark movie that gets in your head—it even affected Jennifer herself as she was filming. “I never lose myself in a movie. This is the only time I’ve lost myself. I couldn’t tell my body that none of it was real. I kept on hyperventilating,” said Lawrence. It affected her so much that she ended up in the hospital. She lost complete control and started to hyperventilate and dislocated a rib. “I have oxygen tubes in my nostrils, and Darren’s like, ‘It was out of focus; we’ve got to do it again.’ And I was just like, ‘Go f**k yourself,’” Lawrence recalls. She claims she would never work with director Darren Aronofsky again.

Lawrence is now one of the most firmly established actresses of our time. This solidified her place in the world of cinema, as she believes that in order to stay on top, you have to keep working hard at what you do. She doesn’t take much time off in between roles. “I don’t like waking up with nothing to do, or going to sleep without accomplishing anything,” Lawrence said. “That really depresses me,” she continued. Sticking true to her statement, she just finished filming her latest movie, Don’t Look Up, which was released in December 2021 on Netflix. The movie, directed by Adam McKay, makes an allegorical plea to follow climate science. On February 19, 2021, Jennifer announced that she was engaged to art gallery director, Cooke Maroney, whom she started dating back in June 2018. Later on, the couple got married and had a beautiful lavish ceremony at Belcourt (Newport, RI).

In September 2021, Lawrence and her husband announced they were expecting their first child. Although she is expanding her family, it doesn’t stop her uncanny persistence to continue to work. Expect to see Jennifer Lawrence in many more films to come later this year. She is already preoccupied with several pre-productions occupying her agenda this year, with Red, White, and Water, which began filming before the pandemic in 2019. She has returned to finish a project she started in the summer of 2021. It’s being made by Lawrence’s production company, and it’s an excellent film that follows the story of a veteran returning home after suffering a brain injury in Afghanistan. There is no exact date for its release, but it should be released later this year.
