An Explosive Sky in July

This month there’s plenty of exciting events to get to, and of course there is, it’s a month of celebration! Test out your costume-creating skills at Florida Supercon, listen to some music under the stars in Fort Lauderdale, and snack on some juicy mangos at a festival in South Beach.

Sci-Fi, anime, comic book, movie, and cartoon lovers can all unite under one roof at Florida Supercon! Not just another Comic Con, Supercon features celebrity guests, comic book writers and artists, famous wrestlers, and more. This year, don’t miss out on meeting George Takei from Star Trek, Jason Isaacs from Harry Potter, Benedict Wong from Doctor Strange, and Creed Bratton from The Office, to name a few. Don’t forget to dress up as your favorite character, there will be tons of cosplay competitions and contests!

ROCK THE BLOCK

Every first Friday of the month, enjoy a free, fun, and family-friendly event at Rock the Block on Breaker’s Avenue. This Fort Lauderdale Beach block party will allow you to shop, drink, eat, and dance all night! Music will be provided by Donny Oldfield Band, and local street vendors will serve up tasty food and refreshing cocktails. Be sure not to miss the classic car show and exotic cars from Miami Exotic Car Racing that will be on display! Some of the shopping vendors are Tipsy Tanks, Scarfisized, Bells and Bling, and Barefoot Bee’s Boutique. Head out to support!

You know it’s summer when Fort Lauderdale brings back Starlight Musicals, sponsored by Bank of America. This concert series allows you to spend relaxing nights outdoors with family and friends as you listen to live music. The lineup for July includes N2Nation (Motown), Samantha Russell Band (Country), The Fabulous Fleetwoods (Southern Rock), and Curbstone (TropRock). Make sure to bring along your coolers, picnic baskets, lawn chairs, and blankets as you spend a night out under the stars!

Want to shop ‘till you drop and support local businesses? Well, now you can at The Flamingo Flea, a bi-monthly modern flea market that’s held at Tarpon River Brewing in Fort Lauderdale. Past events have been quite the success with over 40 handmade vendors, kids’ crafts, and live music. The vendors sell everything from delicate jewelry to skin care and even craft batched foods. Check on their Facebook page for a full list of their amazing vendors; it’s going to be a fantastic time at the flea!

Spread your wings and flutter on over to the Deering Estate for their Summer Butterfly Walk. Held every fourth Saturday of the month from June-September, this event will allow you to walk through the property’s various habitats in search of rare butterflies. Keep your eye out for the Ruddy Daggerwing, Dina Yellow, and Atala species as you walk amongst trees and past bushes. There’s nearly 40 species of butterflies that call the Deering Estate home; you’re bound to spot more than a few!

The South Beach Mango Festival is making its return to the 305, and it’s perfect timing. This month will have soaring temperatures so heading out to munch on refreshing mangos is a great idea! This festival will feature live music, cooking classes, contests, kids’ entertainment, local vendors, mango experts, and mango farmers all on-site. A key feature of this year’s fest, will be the first-ever “Yoga, Stretch, Meditation and Mangos” classes. Delicious mango desserts, treats, and even mango-inspired cocktails will be served, so get ready to eat and drink away!
