Beyond The Label: Designers Fight Against Aids

By: Marla Horn Lazarus

“Not only does Design on a Dime help fund an important cause, it also gives us the opportunity to interact with our design community in a friendly-competitive setting.”

The beginning of the end of AIDS starts with knowledge. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida ranked first among 50 states in number of HIV diagnoses in 2013, and Miami was one of the hardest hit cities by HIV in 2014. As the number of affected Floridians and people around the country with HIV/AIDS continues to grow, non-profit organization Housing Works’ mission has become more crucial than ever before: to end AIDS by 2025. To raise awareness and funds that support their lifesaving services, the organization hosts an annual fundraiser called Design on a Dime, a three-day, star-studded benefit and sale founded in New York City by designer James Huniford to bring together the world’s most celebrated interior designers, influential tastemakers and celebrities in support of Housing Works’ national campaign to terminate the AIDS epidemic.

Since its inception in 2004, the Design on a Dime benefit has raised over $10 million. In 2016, Housing Works grew the event nationally expanding it to Miami for the first time. Next month, this highly anticipated event returns to Miami from February 3-5th and takes place at the Moore Building in the Miami Design District. The fundraiser’s participating designers will create one-of-a-kind room vignettes with new furniture, art and home décor merchandise, which is donated and then sold for up to 80% off retail pricing during the event. Proceeds will fund Housing Works’ “AIDS-FREE USA 2025” campaign.
This year’s designers include: A.Keith Powell, B+G Design, Benjamin Moore, Decor Aid, Fava Design Group, Hallock Design Group, Hinajosa Design, Maggie Cruz Interior Design, Mendez-Vela Design, Mike Stake Studio, MS2 Design Studio, Oskar Torres, RedNoir by M.Arellano, Robert Rionda and V*Starr Interiors.

“We are so excited to participate in the benefit event once again,” state Giselle Loor and Brett Sugerman of B+G Design, Inc. “The camaraderie we all share is fantastic! We’ve made many new industry friends through the process–an extra perk. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone’s creations this year!”

Design on a Dime Miami will be hosted by James Huniford, Founding Chair of Design on a Dime, and Co-Chairs Michael Boodro (Editor in Chief of ELLE DECOR), Criselda Breene and Todd Davis and Robert Brown (Brown Davis Interiors).

“For a long time we had dreamed of expanding Design on a Dime outside of New York,” states James Huniford, Design on a Dime Founding Chair. “Last year that became a reality when we brought the event to Miami. The design community there welcomed us with enthusiasm and vigor. We are privileged and honored that the people of Miami recognize the power this event has to be transformative and we are committed to creating an impactful event that will touch the lives of thousands in need. ”

The interior design benefit and sale will include a “Chairman’s Preview Dinner” on February 3rd, with a sneak peek of vignettes before the Opening Night. The ticketed “Opening Night Reception and Sale” will be hosted on February 4th, with a VIP cocktail hour, followed by the “Opening Night Reception Sale” where guests can also meet participating designers and co-chairs. The affair will continue with a “Designer Sale” open to the public on February 5th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For tickets to the events, go to doadmia2017.splashthat.com.
