August in South Florida can be described as many things but one word that stands out is… hot. On some days being outside is doable, but more often than not it’s pushing 100 degrees! Chill out this month with the National Rum Day Fest, libations at the SoFlo Wine & Beer Festival, and good ol’ A/C at the International Ballet Festival—there’s lots to do to stay cool!
BE ON POINTE
July 28-Aug 19
The International Ballet Festival is considered the most important ballet festival in all of the country, featuring the greatest ballet stars from England, France, Italy, Argentina, and so many others. Its 23rd festival will be no less extravagant than the others, with ballet happenings and performances spanning over two weeks! Head to the kickoff on August 4th for the Youth Gala, where the youngest of all ballet stars will sail through the air and point their toes! Other highlights on the lineup include documentaries, ballet master classes, workshops, art exhibits, and book presentations.
August 3 & Aug 10
The Starlight Musicals concert series by Bank of America aims to provide great tunes for the long summer nights! Bring out friends and family (lawn chairs and coolers, too!) for an evening that’s fun for everyone. On August 3rd, South Florida band Brass Evolution will take the stage to perform Classic Rock, and for the last concert, on August 10th, Shane Duncan will end with a bang! Don’t miss these two shows for the ending to a perfect summer!
SHINING CHILD STARS
Everyone believes their kid can be a model, but now you can actually have an opportunity to make it come true! Have your little one dress to the nines as they strut down the runway during Fort Lauderdale Kids’ Fashion Weekend! Children three to fifteen years old will be able to sign up for this exciting opportunity to show off various fashion collections. It’s a great chance for them to learn the importance of self-expression, diversity, friendship, and confidence at an early age, plus, they can add “model” to their resume! How cute!
SAUCE IT UP!
It can be almost too easy to get bored in the kitchen when you feel like you’ve cooked the same dish a hundred times. Try spicing up your cookbook at the Right on Target® Cooking Class! The Wynwood Yard will host this event and the chef will be none other than The Yard’s very own farm-to-table chef and director of community and culinary, Chef Julie Frans. This hands-on class will focus on summer favorites, and their crisp wine pairings, which will be paired by Juan Hernandez of Domaine Select.
RUM’S THE WORD
Tap into your inner Captain Jack Sparrow and let your love for rum run rampant, or, rumpant, as you head out to the 2nd Annual National Rum Day Fest. Local and global rum brands, from Florida to the islands, will be abundant as you enjoy complimentary tastings and educational seminars. Live musical acts, games, and much more will all be a part of this entertaining outing. After the fest, you’ll definitely be RUMiniscing on all of the good times you had!
WINE DOWN W/A BREW
The Inaugural South Florida Wine and Beer Festival is a Caribbean-themed fest featuring exotic fruit flavored liquor. Code Red Band will play live Caribbean music, and versatile DJs will spin different genres ranging from Reggae to Latin to AfroBeats. Art displays, cooking demonstrations, and lots of Caribbean food will be available so come ready to have all of your senses stimulated! Wine and beer will be provided by Schnebly Redlands Winery and Brewery, which will also include a full bar, a souvenir cup, and even complimentary wine/beer food pairings!
